for those of us over 30.
In studies published in the Journal of Clinical
Endocrinology & Metabolism and the Journal Thyroid,
researchers found a high prevalence of thyroid
dysfunction in study participants over 30.
And in a study published in the journal Thyroid Research and Practice,
scientists found that the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction is even higher in those over 40.
In fact, when it comes to the Hormonal House of Cards, thyroid hormones are usually
the first to fail.
And that’s a big deal.
Because your thyroid’s role is to take iodine, which is found in a variety of foods…
And convert it into two thyroid hormones…
Which are known as T3 and T4.

But when your cortisol levels always stay high, which can happen due to everyday stressors like:
- A demanding job
- Arguments on social media
- A rocky relationship
- Sitting in bad traffic
- A challenging child
Your metabolism slows way down.
And those aren’t the only things that can affect your cortisol.
Remember, each of these five hormones is interconnected.
So while it usually starts with your thyroid hormones, cortisol is usually next to go.
In one study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism,
researchers found that people with thyroid hormone problems have cortisol levels
that are 23% higher than those with normal thyroid function.
And because of the elevated cortisol, your brain thinks you’re in survival mode…
So it shuts down your metabolism, your digestion, and even parts of your brain.
Why does it do this?
Because even though your stress might be due to something “harmless,” like your boss nonstop
texting on the weekend. Your brain can’t differentiate between “harmless” stress and a real threat…
So it takes energy from anywhere in the body that it views as “non-essential”, which includes your metabolism,
your digestive system, and even parts of your brain…
And it sends that energy to places like your muscles and your heart, which your brain considers essential to your survival.
Think of it like this, if you need to fight, your muscles better work, and if you need to run for your life,
your heart better be able to pump blood…
But you know what’s NOT essential to fighting or running away?
Your metabolism raging and burning fat, your
digestion operating smoothly so you don’t experience
irregular bowel movements, or your brain being
able to solve math equations or complex problems.
So the fact that those places get robbed of energy
makes sense, in fact, it’s actually smart of your brain to do this.
The problem though, is that if your stress isn’t coming from a real threat,
but instead from from your 24/7 job, family commitments or thyroid problems…
Then your metabolism, digestion, and brain always remain robbed of energy…
It’s impossible to burn fat and you constantly feel like your brain is in a fog.
Pretty crazy, right?
And that’s just two of the hormones in the Hormonal House of Cards.
So let’s keep things going.
The 3rd Hormone In Dr. Wood’s Hormonal House Of Cards Is Insulin.
Insulin is a hormone that’s produced in your pancreas,
and you’ve almost certainly heard of insulin before,
especially as it relates to diabetes.
The thing is, though, you don’t need to be a diabetic to
have insulin challenges.
Because as world-renowned health expert
Dr. Mark Hyman puts it:
“Insulin is one of the monster hormones that causes weight gain..”
And he’s right.
However, the bigger problem is what’s happening between all five of these hormones.
But while Dr. Hyman may be oversimplifying things a little bit here,
there’s also a lot of truth to what he’s saying…
Because high insulin levels definitely are one of the
major reasons behind your weight loss resistance.
Insulin helps your body convert the carbohydrates you
eat into sugar (glucose) and then tells your body to store
this sugar as glycogen in your muscles.
The problem, though, is that your muscles can only
store a small amount of glycogen at any given time,
and once your muscles’ about-to-store glycogen is
maxed it, your body has no choice but to store additional
glycogen as fat.
Obviously, that’s not good if you’re trying to lose weight…
And it’s especially brutal when you combine high insulin with the other hormones we’ve looked at so far.
Remember, it is a domino effect.
And just as Thyroid issues have a direct effect on Cortisol.
Cortisol has a direct effect on Insulin.
One study published in the journal Diabetes Care found that people with high cortisol levels
had a 37% increased risk of insulin resistance.
A separate study in the same journal found people with high cortisol levels had a
57% higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes AND insulin resistance.
Finally, a study published in the journal Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism found that people
with high cortisol levels had a 44% higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome, which is a
cluster of risk factors that can lead to insulin resistance and other health problems.
And when you have Insulin resistance, low thyroid, and high cortisol…
you’re metabolism has virtually zero chance of working properly.
Think about it.
Insulin and cortisol are BOTH telling your body to store more fat…
While your thyroid hormones are telling your body not to burn fat.
So is it any wonder that you’ve been struggling to lose weight?
As you’ve seen, each hormone leads to a problem with the next and Insulin is no different.
Because insulin resistance leads to a problem with the next hormone.
The 4th Hormone In Dr. Wood’s Hormonal House of Cards- Estrogen.
Now, estrogen is what’s referred to as a
“sex hormone,” and just like issues with your

than those without PCOS.
And when estrogen levels are too low or simply out of
balance with progesterone, another important
female reproductive hormone, it can easily lead to weight loss resistance.
One of the tell-tale signs of erratic estrogen levels
is that you’ll notice more fat getting stored in your
belly and hips, and you’ll notice that this fat is visceral and clingy…
To the point where it feels like it’s impossible to
get rid of it, no matter how much dieting or exercising you do.
For many women, erratic estrogen problems start in their mid-thirties and then continue before,
during, and after menopause.
The reason why is because as a woman exits her prime reproductive years…
Which normally happens between the ages of 30 and 35, the balance between estrogen and progesterone
can grow increasingly out of whack
And as women enter their 40s…
This imbalance between estrogen and progesterone only becomes worse.
Which can negatively affect other hormones in the Hormonal House of Cards …
Leading to you putting on even more fat.

To summarize, low estrogen leads to an increase in Leptin, and when Leptin is too high, your body becomes resistant to it.
Which means…
